Floating Island
Hadar Saifan's sculptural installation consists a sea mattress wrapped in a thermal blanket. The blanket, which is made of a cold, thin and toxic aluminum, is supposed to insulate and protect the body's heat in emergency and extreme situations. It's also known, among other things, from pictures of refugees arriving in inflatable boats to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
In the work Saifan deals with the tension between tourism and immigration and emissions, and the gap between arriving in a new place by choice or necessity. It refers to the absurd combination that often takes place in the Israeli summer between spending time camping at the beach and military operations and wars. In her work Saifan creates a temporary emergency kit - a small and safe floating island, intended for a single user.
