Refuge

Due to the lack of warning time to reach an underground shelter, thousands of portable bomb shelters (miguniot) were deployed along the northern border and in the Negev. In every shelter model, careful thought is put into providing optimal protection and creating interior spaces that are safe from shrapnel.

Here, inside a metal shelter in the border community of Hanita, Saifan shoots from the innermost space of the structure. Light enters through the single entrance, while inside lies complete darkness. The same is true for a concrete shelter placed in a playground in the heart of Sderot. Every shelter has its own unique sound, the distinct way blast waves and the noises of war echo within it. On October 7th, these shelters in the Negev transformed from a safe harbor during fire into horrific death traps.
